The glass house was crowded with anxious Street-wear fans this morning in Pomona. The Dim Mak crew headed Inland to be part of the dopest swap meet I've ever been to. People were lining up all morning to get their hands on the best bargain for Kid Robot, Obey, Paul Frank, & of course DMC! It was a great turnout of companies, all bringing awesome merchandise for sale. Kid Robot was the main attraction but they ain't got nothin on us!! We too had a successful morning, selling everything from screen tees to record vinyls. It was pretty chaotic but mos def' an amazing turnout. Keep a look out for the new collection coming soon.

We've made MAGIC!

The Dim Mak crew just got back from The Magic Trade Show yesterday. With loads of boxes and bagfuls of swag in hand, the team definitely felt the strain of hard work but all in all, the event was a huge success. It was exciting to show of the best designs and styles from a collection that everyone worked so hard on. Scouting designs from other labels also gave them insight and inspiration. Everyone got a chance to hit up the Revolution Lounge and DOPE after-parties while on the strip. Steve laid down his DJ set during the trade show along with the DM staff. Work Hard and Party Harder definitely sets the tone for a great trip to Vegas!

Def Jux, Dim Mak Use Merch To Push Their Brands

When most people think of yard sales, they might picture forlorn piles of musty old junk, slightly stained clothes, dog-eared books and discarded toys.

A yard sale held by Dim Mak Records, however, is a different animal. Featuring free beer, food and a DJ lineup to rival any A-list nightclub, Dim Mak yard sales, which have taken place in Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Manila, Philippines, serve to build the label's brand and to showcase the wide variety of Dim Mak merchandise available.

For many years, labels tended to focus their merch energies on promoting bands; label-specific merch was generally limited to a handful of perfunctory T-shirts, key chains and mugs. But in recent years, two labels, Brooklyn's Definitive Jux and L.A.'s Dim Mak, have bucked this trend and have begun to develop merch lines dedicated to promoting not just their artists but the labels themselves.

For Def Jux, expanding its label-specific merch was a natural extension of the strong brand it had sought to develop since its launch in 1999. "We noticed that kids identified with the brand early on in the life of the label," co-founder Amaechi Uzoigwe says. "We did Def Jux-branded tours that did well. We were meeting kids with Def Jux tattoos."

When Def Jux launched its online store in June, it decided to offer more label-centric merch beyond T-shirts, Uzoig- we says.

"We have belt buckles, which sell like crazy, and after we noticed some of our artists wearing dog tags, we added those," he says. "And of course, we have the sneakers."

Influential graffiti artist Phase 2 designed the sneakers, which are currently only available at the label's online store but will be at some retail outlets this fall.

"I'm surprised at the success of the sneak- ers, although I always thought it was such a cool idea," Uzoigwe says. "But they're not just a cool thing for us to sell. They are a way for us to speak to and grow our audience. We know a lot of the kids, like our artists, are into sneakers, and this was a way for us to say, 'We fit your feet and your lifestyle.' "

Dim Mak's merch strategy focuses on branded sunglasses and headphones, in addition to T-shirts. But the label, founded by DJ Steve Aoki, didn't start off thinking that its merch would become such a huge part of its business plan.

"I was DJ'ing at [fashion trade show] Magic, and they gave me a booth," Aoki says. "I had no idea what to do with it, so I took some label shirts we had sitting around and stuck an intern in the booth. People came up to us nonstop throughout the conference to ask about the shirts and opportunities, and it evolved from there."

Aoki says Dim Mak produces about 30 T-shirt designs per season, which are sold at fashionable boutiques like L.A.'s Kitson and Colette in Paris. All the T-shirts incorporate the Dim Mak name somewhere in the design.

"The presentation of the Dim Mak name varies from shirt to shirt," label manager Ana Calderon says. "In some cases, it's really in your face; other times, it's more abstract. But we always have the name on the tag and hang tags."

Aoki says he plans to expand the fashion line in the future by partnering with a number of designers and working with his sister, model/actress Devon Aoki, to design apparel that includes women's wear and denim. He also plans to hold more events like the yard sales and organizes fashion shoots where Dim Mak artists model the label's latest attire.

"The clothing does well," says Aoki, who declines to say what portion of Dim Mak's revenue is generated by apparel sales. Label brand manager Mike Soops says Aoki's DJ gigs provide the bulk of the label's income, but that the clothing line comes in second, ahead of music sales.

"The clothing line is more active right now," Soops continues. "The label just signed a bunch of new artists, so we don't know whether the merch will continue to be such a big chunk. But it has definitely helped us build up our base of supporters and bring our core community together."

This past week, we've spotted some cool peeps rockin the DMC line all over LA and Inland Empire. The Faint show brought many fans to sport some tanks and hoodies from the collection. Pomona made it raaainnn DMC at The Glass House last Monday. A lot of people came out in style, showing off the looks from the line like tanks, Tees, and hoodies. I'm always looking forward to see how far everyone [especially girls] can take their creativity when putting together dope outfits. Everyone's so innovative! Nonetheless, the crowd rocked the collection as always and creatively represented DMC. Holla!

Yard Sale Madness x The Cobrasnake

Manila struck gold yesterday during the yard sale at the Embassy Lounge by The Cobrasnake himself. We're talking tees, vintage items, stickers, magazines, clothes- all for sale. There were plenty of photo ops as well. Hipsters equipped with oversize sunglasses and trucker hats came to check out all the cool gear. Afterwards, cocktail hours were from 8-11. This is right up my alley. Shopping then drinks? Items from DMC were definitely hot commodities. "Manilians" can now sport them overseas. So, exclusive merchandise? food? drinks? hanging out with Steve? All and all, it was a great event. HOLLA BACK MANILA!

This past weekend, we had a photo shoot for a new Dim Mak Collection "Tank Top" campaign that we are hard at work getting ready to launch. The day began with me arriving at the office around 8:30 AM, which I believe is pretty early considering it was a Sunday. Our photographer was coming from Orange County, so I was expecting him to be a bit late. But at 9:30 AM, Quang Le walks in. Amazing! Not just because he arrived on time, but because its "Quang Le"! Photographer to the likes of Matt Costa, Mickey Avalon, Larry Clark, Leo Romero, RVCA Clothing, LRG, Vans, DC, Creative Recreation, Thrasher, Busta Rhymes, Bun B, etc.). Not only did Quang come and setup some crazy lighting, but rapper Murs graced us with his presence! I have to say that Murs kept it interesting, and definitely is one cool dude! I definitely cant wait to launch the campaign, but in the meantime, here are some "behind the scenes" photos I was able to sneak in!

Mhmm it's Monday night and I'm starving my ass off! Bryan, Andrew, and I are driving in the car headed to Turntable Lab and we're thinking about what to eat...what's in the area? Well there's Canters right across the street from TTL, then there's Antonio's (mexican) off Melrose. Where to go, what to eat? Bryan isn't feeling meaty slices of meat stuck between two pieces of bread, so I guess that leaves Antonio's. We drive by the place and it's closed, there goes that idea. WTFFFFF? A few weeks ago, Ana mentions a nice Peruvian restaurant called Mario's. It's on the border of Hollywood and Hancock Park. I remember being satisfied with my meal so we decide, Mario's it is! You walk in and the first thing you smell is Chinese food. Does that sounds right? Chinese food in a Peruvian restaurant?! Looking at the dishes on everyone's table you see somewhat of a resemblance between Asian and Latin, call it "fusion" if you will. Both times I've been here for dinner, the tables are always packed. I doubt this place is ever empty. After peering through the menu for a good almost 10 minutes, I decide on getting a pasta plate with chunks of asada, shrimp, onions and tomatoes and a glass of Horchata to quench my thirst. While we wait for our food, the waiter brings us a basket of warm, soft bread and a side of butter. Now the part of the story you've all been waiting for! How did it taste?
